Close-up detail of an aged Asian Elephant’s head and face while it is in a quiet moment with its eyes closed (captive environment photograph).

The Asian or Asiatic elephant is the only living species of the genus Elephas and is distributed in Southeast Asia from India in the west to Borneo in the east. Asian elephants can be identified by their smaller, rounded ears. (An African elephant's ears resemble the continent of Africa.) Asian elephants are the largest living land animals in Asia and have been domesticated for thousands of years. The powerful beasts have been employed to move heavy objects, such as felled trees, to carry humans on their backs, and even to wage war. The earliest indications of domestication of Asian elephants are engravings on seals of the Indus Valley civilization dated as third millennium BC.
