Description
In this photo by Lincoln Rogers, a contemporary woman washes laundry and portrays the role of domestic help in the historic, reconstructed Bents Old Fort in La Junta, CO (USA). Women at the early nineteenth-century trading post could hold down jobs, which were welcome in that remote region, but their employment options were limited and their daily duties inside the fort were arduous. This is a photograph taken during an event that recreated authentic life of the times in the period-correct rebuilt fort. Photography textures and filters have been used to give it an old, vintage look and feel of the times.
Bents Old Fort was originally constructed in the early 1800's as a trading station and way post along the old Sante Fe Trail between Santa Fe, Mexico and St. Louis, MO (USA). It was historically significant and played a major role in its time. Almost everyone famous for exploring or making their reputation in America's Old West spent some time there at one point, along with people like this domestic helper who found a place of refuge and employment in the untamed land.

And here's another that just brings the past to life Lincoln. Believe it or not, my mother had a washboard and an old wringer thingy when I was about 3-4 and we had no running water in the house. So this brings back some memories - though both my Mom and I are just as happy not to think of them often...lol. F/V

I'll bet! Some pleasant memories are ones we wouldn't want to relive! :o) Thanks for the nice comment.
